Plea for the Weary Traveller

You have seen everything to see. Everyone you have loved is gone. How lonely are you? Please tell me.

You watch and wait, anticipate the coming of all times of woe. Throughout the years, not without tears, you stay, immutable, unchanged, as kingdoms collapse around you, dissolving into dust. You just survive, still alive, through all that comes your way.

Not alone, of course you find small comforts in the hearts of others, but they leave and you stay and you can never go away from this world into the next one.

Precious, darling, magnificent Lily, torn unwillingly from your side whilst you stood unable to assist, is gone forever.

Akiko follows you until the ends of the earth and beyond, but you’re always out of reach, a face obscured in the mirror.

The other two ladies and young Aimée decided to leave you and move back to their families. For you, this is impossible. You can never – never – go back.

You have seen everything to see. Everyone you have loved is gone, and you wait, mourning, on your own. How lonely are you? Please tell me.
