The rain falls
And the trees gasp
And their leaves cascade
Around the feet of a boy, whose trembling hand
Is reaching out for the first time to meet the autumn land.
Everything comes to pass,
And the rain falls
And the rivers breathe
And their banks swell
Over the boys wizened feet, who bore him over sky-sung hills
And into valleys where herons lent him the secret languages from their bills,
Which now he offers back to the long rain
In exchange for having lived.
