Living by the Law (Extract)

My palms became sweaty, and my head felt too heavy for my body. As she whipped her hair and fixed her make-up, I saw her veins, and the urge to rip them out was too much. I stood up, expecting to throttle her, but instead running out of the emergency exit door.

I wanted a new life. I wanted a new life so badly! I had never meant to kill before but I then had a new sensation coursing through my body and it felt so good. It was like an adrenaline rush but added with an anticipating amount of sugar.

I started to run down the back of the theatre, desperate to get away from it all. The excitement that filled me when I saw that woman being thrown out by a security guard was terrifying. She stumbled over to me and asked me something, but there was a white noise in my head and it washed her out. The urge, so powerful, took over and my hands went straight to her neck. They clasped around her little neck so easily that she started choking instantly. I wanted to stop, but I couldn’t.

Her veins were near to popping and her eyes had almost rolled over when I let go. She was still breathing, but in short, spaced gasps.

I felt relief as I let go, because I let go. I managed to get past the urge, though it killed me on the inside. I lifted the girl up and, luckily for her, it was a small town, so the hospital was not far.

They took her immediately from my arms and after that everything was a blur, until the doctor asked, “Who could do a thing like that?”

“Me.” I answered, with a slight glimmer of hope in my voice.
